Mayco Crystalline Glazes
Mayco's Crystalline Glaze program creates opalescent crystals with more consistency, higher probability of growth and with a greater level of control over the location of crystal development. Their Crystalline system involves the use of three products: Engobes, Seeding Media and Crystalline Clear. Engobes are a clay-based coating that are applied to greenware or bisque. In addition to providing color beneath the clear glaze finish, the Engobe serves to protect decorative design work from imperfections in or on the raw clay surface.
CR-100 Crystal Clear and CR-301 Seeding Media are designed to work in conjunction to create microcrystalline patterns in the clear glaze. One drop of the seeding media will create a localized pattern of crystal design while a light all-over wash will create a broad pattern. The firing cycle to grow crystals involves ramping the kiln up to 2300ºF (1260ºC) as fast as possible, then cooling as fast as possible to 2012ºF (1100ºC) and hold for three to six hours. The crystals form during this time of the cooling cycle.
